Well to be brutally honest, I have lost interest in the Dukan diet and therefore I don't feel like updating the blog. Like many dieters, I became obsessed with the diet when I was on it. Understandable as I was loosing kilos at the time. From mid 2009 to Christmas 2009, I lost over 30Kg. A massive amount as most would agree. But by the end of it I was sick of dieting, diet food and all the rigmarole associated with the diet.
Around that time I also worked for Dr Dukan helping him launch the diet in the UK. Stresses of work, commuting and business issues made dieting not very easy. Funny how so many office workers are on diet, but don't seem to be getting any thinner.
I tried restarting the diet once in 2010 and again in Early 2011. Each time I lasted about three weeks. I think that the previous knowledge of Dukan food just put me off. I suppose that the success of my 2009 diet was partly due to it being the first diet I ever did, everything being new and interesting. Doing it over just depressed me. So I ended up putting on about 20Kg over 2010. That is probably the most dangerous aspect of dieting. The speed that you can put it back on. It took me 15 years to go from normal weight to overweight, 6 months to loose most of it (under medical supervision so that part was OK), but one year to put 66% of the lost weight back on!
Now you may ask why someone who was so passionate about the diet and loosing the weight would ever let themselves put it back on and so fast. Well it is not so simple. Us humans often do things against logic and common sense. We are able to diet all week then binge on junk food and sweets if something cracks.
Where the Dukan Diet failed me is that I don't think that it is not geared up for someone like me who needed to loose quite a lot of weight and needed to be kept interested in the diet itself. Everyone I've met who had over 20Kg to loose failed on the diet at one point. The diet does work for people with less to loose. I know a few people who lost between 5 and 10 Kg and have kept most of it off.
So what about the aspects of the diet and my opinion of them? Here are some pros and cons:
Pros:
- The Dukan Diet makes you aware of the food types and teaches you about what is healthy to eat and what is unhealthy.
- It teaches you to cook in a more healthy way.
- You can loose weight quite fast in the initial stages of the diet if you stick to it.
Cons:
- You get bored with some of the food quite quickly.
- You get tired as you are not taking on sugars.
- As you are tired, you don't feel like exercising. No exercise makes dieting more difficult.
- A few other side effects of too much protein (sore joints for example).
- The long-term post diet phase is not really sufficient.
I think Dr Dukan doesn't sufficiently address the cases of people like me who need to loose more weight, who will be longer on the diet and need better solutions for after the diet. I didn't get to the Consolidation phase and the Stabilisation phase of the Dukan Diet is not appealing enough.
Where I'm at now: I'm eating well. Not eating too badly, but if there is something tempting in the house bought for the kids, I just may be tempted. I do eat a bit of bread and drink some wine. We cook healthily and I walk briskly for about 40 minutes 5 times per week. I'm not really loosing much, but I'm not putting anything back on. Don't say 'Diet' to me please. I'll update this page at a later date and say if anything changes.

Hey Doug, I'm not sure I'd agree with the issue for people who have a lot to lose, my sister shifted loads and pretty much kept it all off. I'd seen people with little weight to lose actually do worse as to get these final pounds you do need to work harder.
ReplyDeletePersonally as I've been a bit on and off with it, what I find more problematic is the time it takes to keep it interesting. With a busy lifestyle and not so many Dukan-friendly options for lunch both the time to prepare meals myself at home and the fact I have to carry them around during my over an hour long commute seems like a big contributing factor to my struggles.
I think for me the biggest benefit of Dukan was the learning experience that came with doing it once properly. I got to know which foods work for me, and learned a bit about nutrition of various foods as well.
Anyways :) Hope your current habits will serve you well! :)
Interesting comments Doug. I understand where you're coming from. It's also a big part to do with the state of mind. It does get tiresome "dieting" the whole time. I put 3.5 stone back on that I lost through weight watchers, and I'm only just losing it (plus more after 2 pregnancies) 14 yrs later. It's taken me this long to get in the right state of mind. For me the Dukan diet (I hate the word diet too! I prefer healthy way of eating) is the easiest diet I've encountered, and I have got 10kgs to go. I WILL do it as I have to do it for myself & my two gorgeous kids who I want to be there for. I hope you find your motivation to lose the weight, if not rapidly, but positively in whatever way suits you.

Hi Doug,
ReplyDeleteI understand your sentiments!
I think what we must all understand is that there is a reason why we were/are fat in the first place, you can use a diet to lose weight but unless you change your eating habits permanently, you'll put back the weight you have lost ..
I lost 45 kilos in 6 months and over the last 12 months I've been within 10 kilos of my minimum weight, whenever I feel I've put on too much I do Dukan phase one again and find I lose the weight, it is definitely the fastest way to lose!
I only have the tired feeling the first week but I never get so tired that I can't exercise.
Dukan is a diet that I could do very long term but it works for me for weight loss.
I think that if you can lose weight on the Dukan diet, a good way to maintain is to switch to Montignac. Montignac allows you much more variety and is much more doable. I can't use it to lose a lot of weight but to maintain weight the loss (i.e. changing my eating habits), it works for me!
Good luck Doug.
Hi Doug - the principal of the Dukan diet - I get, but their website doesn't work for me and I've parted with my money and feel I've been ripped off - there appears to be no way in getting in touch with them?? I own a dining pub and the temptations are huge, the working hours very long and any kind of routine is out of the window - I eat on the hoof at unusual hours where I have snatched time. Conjuring up recipes for one doesn't work either. I'm stumped.
ReplyDeleteHey Val,
ReplyDeleteyou might wanna try to prepare a meal yourself before you go to work, so its a win-win situation: you don't waste time at work plus you eat what are you supposed to be! Why not give it a shot?
I started the Dukan Diet yesterday. I've started my own blog (http://chubsdiet.blogspot.com) to keep me motivated. I'm aiming to lose about 30lb and hopefully that is a manageable enough target to reach consolidation phase and stabilization phase.
ReplyDeleteHi Doug - I am with you re the Dukan Diet. I did really well to start with and am a stay at home Mum so didn't have the issue with going to work but just found it all soooo boring!!! After a month my knee started to get very painful to the extent that I could only go up and down stairs one at a time! A week later it was so painful that I could hardly walk at all - I then read about how this type of diet can cause joint pain and thought that any diet that can cause this can't be a good diet so I gave it up and within a week my knee pain was gone! I now follow a healthy low carb diet and feel great. Good luck in the future :)
ReplyDeletei think you familiar about this topic, just wait another tip's..:)
ReplyDeleteNice information, Merry Christmass...
